How do you know you’re being tracked with AirTag

(NewsNation) – What was supposed to be fun at Disney World has become a disturbing discovery for one Tennessee family.

Jennifer Gaston and her middle-aged family were enjoying the Magic Kingdom when a mysterious alarm popped up on her teenage daughter’s phone. Someone was using an Apple AirTag to track 17-year-old Madison Gaston’s every move.

Madison tells NewsNation Prime she noticed the warning that an AirTag was detected moving with her. She rapped the alarm, revealing a map of all the places she’d been to Disney World in four hours.

The family was on their way back to their vehicle at this time as the park was closed for the day. Meanwhile, AirTag followed them from train to truck.

“We just started frantically, like shaking our clothes and emptying our bags,” recalls Jennifer Gaston. “We got into the truck, closed the door and drove away. We … couldn’t find protection in the park. ”

The Gaston family called the local sheriff’s office to report the stalking, and officers met them at the hotel to file a report. Authorities checked the last AirTag location the family owned, which was in their parking spot at Disney.

“I think what happened was between us as we shook our clothes and emptied our bags, it fell somewhere in this parking spot. If we had known then what we know now, we would have taken the time to look for the tag so we can report it to the authorities and they can investigate. But at that time, we had no idea and we didn’t know, ”said Jennifer Gaston.

After mentally tracing their steps, Madison thinks someone might have put an AirTag on it while it was in a crowded line, shoulder to shoulder, while driving through the jungle. She says the first location that AirTag detected her was in the queue for that particular attraction.

“We were just shocked. I am grateful that Madison… was kind of familiar with what to do and a little bit familiar with what AirTag is, ”said Jennifer Gaston. “On the other hand, I had no idea, didn’t know. So when she got a notification and told me she was being followed because it was placed on her and connected to her device somewhere, I was shocked. I was frightened. And of course, our first instinct was, you know, to find it, take it off us, get away from us so no one could follow us anymore. It was definitely a terrifying situation. ”

Gaston says that after going through this terrifying experience, she told people to always stay alert and educate themselves on AirTags.

“Learn to know that you have the right settings on your phone to get a notification because when the AirTag is away from the owner for a certain period of time, it will alert the device that was with you, but you need to have certain settings on your phone to do this. Gaston said. “Then just be aware of your surroundings.”

Apple says that if you notice AirTag moving with you over time, you’ll get a notification if you activate certain notifications on your individual device.

The tech giant says to get alerts make sure:

– Go to Settings> Privacy> Location Services and turn on Location Services.

– Select Settings> Privacy> Location Services> System Services. Turn on Find My iPhone.

– Select Settings> Privacy> Location Services> System Services. Turn on Significant locations to receive notifications when you reach an important location, such as your home.

-Choose Settings> Bluetooth and turn on Bluetooth.

– Go to the Find My app, tap the Me tab and turn on Tracking Notifications.

To find an unknown AirTag, Apple says it can play a sound if you follow these steps:

-Tap an alert.

– Tap Continue, then tap Play Sound.

-Listen to the sound. You can play again if you need more time to find an item.

To turn off AirTag and stop it from sharing your location, Apple tells you to tap Instructions to turn it off and follow the on-screen instructions. Learn more about identifying AirTags here.

“AirTag, AirPods, and other Find My network accessories include anti-tracking features,” Apple said in a statement on its support site. “They shouldn’t be used to track people, and they shouldn’t be used to track property that doesn’t belong to you. It is a crime to use these products to track people without their consent in many countries and regions around the world. If an AirTag, AirPods Kit, or Find My Network Accessory is found to be tracking a person unlawfully, law enforcement may request any available information from Apple to assist in their investigation.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office informed the NewsNation branch of WKRN that because the family had not physically found the AirTag, their office did not detect any criminal violations. However, they did an incident report on the matter.
