The Prize for Musical Excellence – originally titled the “sidemen” category when it debuted – is awarded to artists, musicians, songwriters and producers whose originality and influence in creating music has had a dramatic impact on music.
JUDAS PRIEST is the second band to receive the Musical Excellence award; the E STREET BAND was the first. Last year, late OZZY OSBOURNE and SILENT REL guitarist Randy Rhodes was one of the recipients of the Musical Excellence Award.
According to the Hall of Famethe JUDAS PRIEST members who will be inducted include current members Rob Halford (singing),Ian Hill (bass),Glenn Tipton (guitar) and Travis Scott (drums), together with former members KK Downing (guitar),Les Binks (drums) and deceased drummer Dave Holland†
“Wow, this is so exciting – finally. Finally, you know?’ Halford told Billboard after receiving the news before the public announcement. “And, glory hallelujah, there’s another metal band in the… Hall of Fame† That’s the blessing we’ve all been waiting for.”
The induction ceremony will take place on November 5, 2022 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. It will air at a later date HBO and stream on HBO Max† There will also be a radio simulcast on SiriusXM‘s Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Radio channel 310.
Rock And Roll Hall of Fame 2022 initiates:
Musical Excellence Award
JIMMY JAM & TERRY LEWIS
Early Influence Prize
Ahmet Ertegun Award
To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination.
“Nominee ballots are sent to an international polling station of more than 1,000 artists, historians and members of the music industry,” Rock Hall officials said in a statement. “It takes into account factors such as an artist’s musical influence on other artists, length and depth of career and body of work, innovation and superiority in style and technique.”
JUDAS PRIEST was previously on the ballot for Rock Hall induction in 2020, but didn’t get enough votes to make it to that year’s class.
Having been eligible for introduction since 1999, PRIEST was also on the ballot for the class of 2018 of the Rock And Roll Hall of Famebut was ultimately omitted from the list of candidates.
In October 2020, Halford said the heavy metal genre is “not respected enough” by the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame† Asked in an interview with word in your ear if he was “troublesome” by the fact that PRIEST is not initiated into the Rock Hall yet, Halford said, “Well, let’s put it this way. You have all these institutions here in America – you have the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame for music; you have the Basketball Hall Of Fame† you have the Baseball Hall Of Fame† american football – you have all these places where I think essentially it’s just a really nice cool acknowledgment of what you’ve done, the work you’ve done and the things you’ve accomplished, the place you’ve been put and so on , and so forth.
“So, will it bother me if we ever get in? Not really. But I think we deserve to be in there. Because I look at the list of people who are there, and I feel we have a place. And it wouldn’t just be for JUDAS PRIEST — it would be for British music, especially British heavy metal music, and that’s a nice achievement. [BLACK] SABBATH are there, which is great. But I’ve always said that as far as the… Rock And Roll Hall of Fame represents, the genre of heavy metal music has not really been cared for and respected enough.
“So I’d like to feel like we’re going to get in eventually.”
As to what his expectations should be for the induction ceremony? PRIEST be chosen for the Rock And Roll Hall of Fameclass of 2022, take down told “The Cassius Morris Show”: “I think that’s the most important thing for me, and I don’t know how it works with the introduction ceremony and stuff… That’s another thing, because of course there will be people [being inducted] there they won’t be, which is all a bit strange. Obviously, with the great drummer of the time, Dave Holland, he is no longer with us; he is deceased. And he will be part of it. So I suppose it’s quite an emotional experience, actually. But I think it’s something that… I suppose it’s a historic moment… I think it’s the big one, really. So we’ll see what happens.”
In February, Hill and Halford told Billboard they’d love to be side by side take down at a Rock And Roll Hall of Fame launch later this year. “It’s no problem for us, no,” Hill said. †ken was an integral part of this band for a very, very long time. He deserves to be there with the rest of us.” Halford predicted that: “It won’t be as awkward as… Ace [Frehley] and Peter [Criss with KISS‘s Rock Hall induction]† I don’t think it will be annoying at all. I think you should let all that go because it’s the night that matters. It’s the moment that matters – but again, the proverbial saying, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”
in 2019, Halford was asked by Fox Sports 910‘s “Freak Nation” if fans could expect one of the first PRIEST members joining the band on stage during a Rock And Roll Hall of Fame induction. He replied: “With something like the Rock And Roll Hall of Famethere is a hint of ‘what if’ [and] ‘whatever.’ It’s an open book.
“I know what you mean, and as I should… [say] in the past it was just a matter of waiting,” he continued. “But it’s a celebration, and it’s 50 years PRIESTand, man, it’s gonna be awesome. When we get in, it’s going to be great.”
after host Kenny Sargent brought the original KISS lineup controversial 2014 Rock Hall induction which was at least partially overshadowed by the musicians’ decision not to perform, Halford said: “[PRIEST is] not the first band this has happened to, and to the day, some things go the way a lot of people want them to.
“I was thinking about this the other day,” Halford added. “And this thing came into my head:”Jimthe needs of many outweigh the needs of a few, or of one.” Spock [in] ‘Star Trek’† When he goes to the radiation room. Is not that great? … That’s a t-shirt, or an inspiration card.”
take down told before Rockin’ Metal Revival that there is a very good chance that he would perform again with his former bandmates as PRIEST gets the wink. “Oh, I definitely think so,” he said. “I mean, why wouldn’t you? It’s something special. We’re all of an age now. These opportunities only come once in a lifetime. And it seems to take a lifetime to get into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame† I’ve always said, there’s no such thing as a young legend, right? [Laughs] So while we’re here, it would be great to receive that accolade and put in a great performance and put it to bed.”
take down left PRIEST in 2011 amid claims of band conflicts, sloppy management and declining performance quality.
in 2019, take down said he contacted JUDAS PRIEST about participating in the band’s 50th anniversary tour, but that their response was that they were not interested in involving him in the celebrations.
in 2018, take down revealed he sent two resignation letters to his bandmates when he decided to quit JUDAS PRIEST† The first was described as “a gracious exit note, implying a smooth retirement from music”, while the second was “boosr, putting all his frustrations on specific parties”.
take down later said he believed the second letter was “a major reason” he was not invited to rejoin PRIEST after tiptondecides to stop touring.
Even though artists are eligible for the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after the release of their first album or single, iconic hard rock and metal bands such as IRON VIRGIN and ENGINE HEAD have yet to be recognized by the institution, which has inaugurated GUNS N’ ROSES in that group’s first year of eligibility.
The Rock Hall not initiated BLACK SABBATH until 2006, and METALLIC followed three years later.
Eligible for introduction since 1999, KISS received its first nomination only in 2009 and was finally inducted in 2014.
DARK PURPLE was eligible for the Rock Hall since 1993, but was inaugurated only in 2016.
