Ms Pac-Man is paving the way to the World Video Game Hall of Fame

ROCHESTER, NY (AP) – More than 40 years after paving the way for female characters in video games, Pac-Man was inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame on Thursday with Dance Dance Revolution, The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time and Civilization by Sid Meier .

Hall of Fame takes into account all kinds of electronic games every year – arcade, console, computer, portable and mobile. Introductors are known for their popularity and impact on the video game industry or pop culture over time.

Arcade game Ms. Pac-Man was released in 1981 as a follow-up to the Midway game after Pac-Man entered the hall as part of an inaugural class in 2015. Pac-Man’s sequel re-imagined the main character to thank fans of the original game, according to the hall. After selling 125,000 cases in the first five years, it has become one of the best-selling arcade games of all time.

There was nothing inherent to gender in the early video games, said Julia Novakovic, the senior archivist in the room. But “by offering the first universally recognizable female character in video games,” she said, “Lady. Pac-Man was a turning point in the cultural conversation about the place of women in the arcades and in society as a whole. “

The 2022 class was selected from among the finalists including Assassin’s Creed, Candy Crush Saga, Minesweeper, NBA Jam, PaRappa the Raper, Resident Evil, Rogue, and Words with Friends. This is the eighth grade to be introduced since the creation of the World Video Game Hall of Fame at The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York.

Konami’s Dance Dance Revolution, first seen at arcades in Japan in 1998, has been recognized for helping to pave the way for other music games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band. This fast paced game puts players on the dance floor with the screen in front to guide their movements.

“Music has been an integral part of human life since prehistoric times, so it’s no surprise that the GDR enjoyed exceptional popularity, spanning age ranges, genders and regions,” said video game curator Lindsey Kurano.

The home version of the game appeared on Sony PlayStation in 1999.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, also first released in 1998, came out for the Nintendo 64 gaming console and defined what a 3D action game could be, Hall of Fame officials said. The award-winning game has sold over 7.6 million copies worldwide and is still hailed by some gamers and critics as one of the best video games ever made.

“Even today, developers around the world recognize The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for its impact on the way they make games,” said digital game curator Andrew Borman. “The expansive 3D world of the game, fluid combat, complex puzzles and a time-changing story combined to inspire players with a miracle they have never forgotten.”

Sid Meier’s Civilization, released in 1991, was recognized as an influential simulation and strategy game. The game, which invited players to develop their own empires, launched a series of more games, including the latest Civilization: Beyond Earth and Civilization VI.

“The addictive nature of the game, which creator Sid Meier himself called” one more spin “quality, and its near-endless capabilities that made it impossible to repeat gameplay, earned Computer Gaming World recognition as the greatest video game of all time in 1996. Said Jon-Paul Dyson, director of The Strong International Center for the History of Electronic Games. “All in all – and considering the extremely long game spans the game provided – players have been involved in the Civilization franchise for over a billion hours.”

Anyone can nominate a game for the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Final selection is made on the advice of journalists, academics, and others with knowledge of the history of video games and their role in society.
