Apple’s CEO of Machine Learning, Ian Goodfellow, stepped down from his role just over four years after joining the company, previously being one of Google AI’s top employees. Borderland Zoë Schiffer.

Goodfellow reportedly delivered a message to employees in an email saying his resignation was partly due to Apple’s return to personal work plan, which required employees to work from the office at least one day a week by April 11, at least two days a week until May 2 and at least three days a week until May 23. “I strongly believe that more flexibility would be the best policy for my team,” Goodfellow said in an email.

Apple employees began returning to Apple Park last month, and on May 23, the three-day office rule took effect. Some employees were dissatisfied with the plan to return to personal work.

In a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook, a group of employees said: “Without the integration that flexibility brings, many of us feel we need to choose between the combination of our families, our well-being and the ability to do the best job or be part of Apple. This is a decision that none of us make lightly, and many would prefer not to.
