Dead by Daylight devs about David King, LGBT + chapters, and shipping characters

Dead by Daylight’s The diverse cast of Killers and Survivors gained their first LGBT + character recently when the rough and quick-tempered David King was confirmed as hilarious. This discovery has been shared in the latest book from the game’s Archives mode, a feature that provides trivia and rewards for completing challenges. Given this is the first LGBT + inclusion in the game, Dead by Daylight Developer Behavior Interactive also included its own dedicated news page in this announcement, for those who aren’t frequent visitors to the archives.

By talking to, Dead by Daylight Creative Director Dave Richard said the studio worked with GaymerX to determine two things: whether “LGBTQ narrative is appropriate,” Richard said, and whether the community and developers were ready for these kinds of stories. Based in part on an analysis by GaymerX, Behavior has determined that David King will be a candidate for this initiative.

Dead by Daylight has been active in the LGBT + community for a while now, both in terms of in-game accessories and supporting various content creators, so why now is the right time for LGBT + narrative? Richard told us that at the beginning of the year … Dead by DaylightThe Survivor was supposed to be a “shell character” supplemented with scraps of context for players to create their own stories. As the game evolved with the archives and more characters were added, relationships began to appear naturally in the characters’ stories. The killer known as The Nurse had a husband, for example, and Ace Visconti is portrayed as a smooth-talking womanizer, but there was no LGBT + story in these biographies. Richard said the community noted this discrepancy, which prompted developers to look for ways to fix this omission.

“And so our LGBTQ community told us,” Well, you got it, so you don’t follow your own rules, “Richard said. “And we said,“ You’re right. You are absolutely right. ” So let’s make sure we do that. Okay, let’s take the time to develop the right angle and the right story so that we have a great narrative that won’t feel symbolic. I can see it in the narrative of David King. ”

But David is not a new character and has not always been described as “cheerful” – at least not as far as knowing about Dead by Daylight is concerned. David’s ex-girlfriend was even mentioned in recollection 342 of the second book of the game. This doesn’t contradict or invalidate the recent announcement of Behavior, but so far that’s all gamers have known about David in terms of his sexuality.

Such retroactive announcements are sometimes criticized by those who would prefer to see a new character rather than see an existing one. Richard said the LGBT + narrative in the new chapter was considered – and is still planned for the future – but that retroactive disclosure was undertaken with speed in mind.

“Definitely creating an entire chapter around the LGBTQ narrative was and still is part of our plan for the future,” said Richard. “However, we wanted to make sure that this content was in our player’s hands as soon as possible. And making a chapter, especially when, say, outside of our comfort zone takes time, a lot more time. And we plan the Chapter well in advance. So we’re not that agile. So we would have to wait even longer. That’s why we decided to do it retroactively. This is one of the reasons.

Even before this announcement about David, some of the community had drawn their own conclusions, or at least expressed their wishes for this Survivor and others through fanart and sending different characters with them. If you browse any trends Dead by Daylight topic on social media, there’s a good chance you’ll stumble across some of David King’s and Dwight Fairfield’s ships. Richard didn’t consider every specific factor in the decision to select David for this LGBT + announcement, but said that community sentiment, including those ships, definitely played a role.

“Of course. Yes, it did weigh in on David’s choice, ”said Richard, when asked if he had seen all the fanarts and if such things were weighed by behavior. “David is a popular character. He is loved by many different players, no matter his background, but he is definitely a favorite of LGBTQ ships with Dwight. So it definitely was taken into account. ”

So how did this announcement become a precedent for future books and expansions? Dead by Daylight’s story? Does every survivor or killer henceforth need his own grand disclosure on a par with David? Richard doesn’t believe it.

“No, definitely not. It’s not something we’re going to start doing, like having statistics in their biography that tell them their exact age, exact sexuality, and things like that, ”said Richard. “We don’t do this. We leave a lot to the interpretation of our players. It also helps to identify with these characters, to leave some elements for our players’ interpretation.
