Free PS Plus games for May 2022 are better than April, but June could surpass both

The new month is a new choice PS Plus games (and not only in other services). Many were hoping the May games would take over the April selection, and while that may not be the case, the free PS Plus games for May 2022 are at least a little better. Until June 7, fans will be able to argue FIFA 22 (PS5 / PS4) Midgard tribes (PS5 / PS4) and Curse of the Dead Gods (PS4).

But a big change is on the horizon. PS Plus subscribers will be able to upgrade in June 2022 and receive PS Plus Extra or PS Plus Premium. At the highest level, players will not only be able to try some of the best PS4 / PS5 games for free, but also get access to over 700 games from PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3. Throw in the demos of PlayStation games as well, and PS Plus Premium packages are very large – even if the cost is debatable.

Free PS Plus games for May 2022 vs. April 2022

But before we look at next month and why fans can expect some really good free PS Plus games in June 2022, it’s worth taking a look at the last few months. May 2022 is better than April 2022, but it is still in some common pitfalls. FIFA 22, for example, is a sports simulator. They typically don’t do well with subscription services, simply because they’re annual releases, and die-hard fans tend to pick them up at the time of release rather than wait months for them. Meanwhile, Midgard tribes and Curse of the Dead Gods they are good games, but their attractiveness is limited. If someone doesn’t like their unique graphics, dungeon-crawling mechanics, or roguelike features, these two games might not be for them.

At least there’s a more general appeal there than with the free PS Plus games for April 2022. They were Hood: Outlaws and Legends, Slay the Spireand SpongeBob SquarePants: The Battle for Bikini Bottom – Hydrated. Kill the spire is probably the best game in the group, but at the same time its card mechanics will deter many players from checking it out. Hood: Outlaws and Legends it’s a multiplayer game that is usually good at subscription services, but doesn’t really work as it should. And then it is SpongeBobsetting aside Nickelodeon’s entire relationship aside, the original game is better than that Hydrated version of it, and that says something.

While PS Plus subscribers have had two weak months lately (although the entire PS Plus in 2022 was weird), there’s one main reason to expect free PS Plus games for June 2022 to be really good.

Why can free PS Plus games for June 2022 be really good?

In short, Sony has always been really good at using its PS Plus service as a hype creator when it was needed. Not only were there some remakes or games in the announcement before the sequels, but the entirety of PS Plus was used to launch the PS5. Not that he needed it anymore, but PS Plus undoubtedly helped sell PlayStation.

In the months leading up to the launch of the PS5, PS Plus had a good streak with a good month after a good month. After the PS5 was released, the main PS5 games were added to the PS Plus service, many games were added in early 2021, and finally three games were released.

Its effectiveness in promoting PS5 cannot be overestimated. And that’s why Sony makes sense to take advantage of the free PS Plus Essentials game selection to boost PS Plus itself. If fans see good games in PS Plus Essentials in June 2022, perhaps a few months later, the PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium tiers will be even more tempting. If the entry level is exciting, many will think the top tier cost might be worth it. Sure, it might sell with a backward-compatible library and so on, but it’ll have to keep rolling out new additions to keep subscribers on board. And the best way to do that, anyway, is with free PS Plus games.

Why might free PS Plus games for June 2022 not set a new standard?

Sony would make sense to follow this path, but it’s also a double-edged sword. There is a concern that if this happened, it would only be temporary. This is actually the law of diminishing returns. The better PS Plus games are at launch, the more subscribers are likely to retain or attract. But at some point, the price and effort put into the PS Plus Essentials tier won’t be worth it, and Sony will have to really push the tiers higher.

So in the long run, it’s possible that the free monthly PS Plus games will suffer at a higher level. It remains to be seen, but if the free PS Plus games for 2022 have proven something so far, it is that not every month will be good. Sony has reasons to get it right in June and maybe a few months later, but like Xbox Games with Gold and Game Pass, free PS Plus games can suffer from the more interesting subscription tier.
