iPhone 14 Pro Max vs iPhone 13 Pro Max: the main differences that can be expected

Introduction

After the iPhone 13 Pro Max, you may be wondering what could be improved for Apple? After all, the 13 Pro Max nailed it with incredible battery life, it is still the fastest phone in the world before the launch of the iPhone 14 series, and it has an excellent camera.

Well, with the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple seems to be improving on one thing that may be holding some people back from purchasing the Pro Max: its physical size! With a thinner bezel around the screen and a narrower overall screen aspect ratio, the iPhone 14 Pro Max may be just as powerful, but in a casing that’s easier to grip with one hand.

Of course, Apple is introducing its most advanced A16 Bionic chip, as well as a rumored all-new 48MP main camera to increase the speed and quality of photos.

But will all of this also result in a higher price?

In this article, we summarize everything you need to know about the iPhone 14 Pro Max vs the iPhone 13 Pro Max, but don’t forget that we are looking at leaks and rumors, so none of the information in this comparison is final. We would have to wait for that until mid-September, when Apple will traditionally present its new iPhones, but now let’s start with …

iPhone 14 Pro Max vs iPhone 13 Pro Max differences at a glance:

  • Thinner borders, higher screen aspect ratio
  • a notch in the shape of a letter and instead of an incision
  • Faster Bionic A16 chip
  • New 48MP main camera
  • Possibly $ 100 higher asking price
  • Possibly satellite communication

Design and display quality

The new 14 Pro Max will feel a bit less gigantic

The iPhone 14 Pro Max largely retains the look of its predecessor with the same screen size, flat sides, and the same glass and stainless steel materials.

However, the dimensions of the new 14 Pro Max are changing. Thanks to the higher aspect ratio of the display, the phone itself will be narrower and easier to hold with one hand.

Even more, however, you’ll notice the i-shaped Face ID system on the front that replaces the cutout. It still takes up a lot of space, but less than a notch, and probably gives the new iPhone 14 Pro series a look unlike any other phone.

Both the 14 Pro Max and the 13 Pro Max come in four colors, three of which are nearly identical: Graphite, Silver, and Gold. However, the fourth color option will change from the current Sierra Blue shade to a new shade of purple.

We see no changes to the contents of the box: expect to see only the Lightning cable and no charger.

But what about the display? Both phones have a 6.7-inch OLED screen with almost the same resolution.

However, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has thinner bezels around the screen and a higher 20: 9 aspect ratio, while the 13 Pro Max has an 19.5: 9 aspect ratio. We expect Apple to further increase the peak brightness of the 14 Pro Max to ensure a more comfortable outdoor viewing experience. Both Pro series iPhones are equipped with ProMotion 120Hz technology for smooth scrolling.

And when it comes to biometrics, both phones rely on Face ID. Despite this new i-shape on the 14 Pro Max, it uses the same sensors and facial recognition technology as the 13 Pro Max.

Performance and software

What does the new Apple A16 chip bring?

So far we only know that Apple is expected to use the new Apple A16 Bionic chip in the iPhone 14 Pro Max, an upgrade over the A15 processor used in the 13 Pro Max.

Apple wanted the iPhone 14 Pro to be the first with a 3nm processor, but problems seem to prevent it, and the A16 could be built using 4nm technology, a smaller leap over the 5nm process used in the 13 series.

Apple is also said to stick to 6GB of RAM in the 14 Pro Max, similar to its predecessor.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is also expected to debut with the latest iOS 16 firmware. As always, the 13 Pro Max is set to be upgraded to iOS 16 at the same time.

Apple has traditionally been updating its phones for 5 or even 6 years, so both are perfectly prepared for the future.

Camera

The new 48MP main camera brings with it high expectations

Apple is a leader in camera quality, especially video, but what’s new this year?

First off, expect to see a brand new and larger 48MP sensor for the 1X main camera, which is a change from the current 12MP. It’s not just about 48MP landscape shots with stunning detail (although we can’t wait to do that), but it’s also about enabling 8K video recording, which could just be a killer feature of the 14 Pro Max.

We also hope for improvements to Cinema Mode, a distinctive feature of the iPhone 13 Pro Max that blurs the background in a video, similar to Portrait Mode for photos. Apple was very proud of this, but a few issues need to be resolved and the resolution is still limited to 1080p.

One thing that doesn’t happen on the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the inclusion of the long-awaited periscope lens. Android rivals such as the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra have had a native long-range zoom lens for several years, which iPhones will not be able to match this year.

Expected differences for the iPhone 14 Pro Max and 13 Pro Max camera:

  • 1X Camera: 48MP on 14 Pro Max vs 12MP on 13 Pro Max
  • 0.5X camera: 12MP, f / 1.8 on both
  • 3X camera: 12MP, f / 2.8 on both

Sound quality and haptics

The iPhone 13 series has made a huge leap in audio quality with louder, richer audio across all three models, and while we haven’t heard anything about the sound quality rumors, we keep our fingers crossed for the 14 series.

Lastly, don’t forget that none of them have a headphone jack (and they’ll probably never come back).

We were also very pleased with the tactile feedback on the iPhone 13 Pro Max thanks to the Taptic engine. So far, we expect it to work the same way in 14 series.

Battery life and charging

Even if it remains as durable as its predecessor, the 14 Pro Max will be a big win

The iPhone 13 Pro Max brought a big leap in battery life, not least by increasing the physical capacity of the battery from its predecessor.

So far, we haven’t heard anything specific about the battery size of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but given the ever-increasing demands of our smartphones, we’d expect the same or larger battery.

  • IPhone 14 Pro Max expected battery size: 4352mAh or more
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max battery size: 4352 mAh

We do not expect any changes on the loading front. The 13 Pro Max supports 27W charging, which means it takes around 2 hours to fully recharge with a compatible charger. We expect more or less the same to be the case with the newer 14 Pro Max.

Both the 14 and 13 series iPhones support MagSafe, a magnetic wireless charging technology that provides speeds up to 15W.

Summary and final verdict

Ultimately, Apple has managed to keep the iPhone 14 Pro Max an exciting secret so far.

We’ve seen some leaks showing a new higher aspect ratio and an i-shaped notch, and we also know of an upcoming, more powerful A16 chip and a 48-megapixel main camera, but none of the major new features of the iPhone 14 have done so simply . That leaves a lot of excitement in the coming months, and maybe… is it the case that there won’t be so many new to iPhone 14? We have to wait and see.

One particular rumor we’ll keep an eye on is the price: will Apple really raise the starting price of the 14 Pro Max by $ 100? And will it even be able to deliver it on time, given the long delays it is facing in the summer with China’s Covid roadblocks?

Anyway, what do you think of the iPhone 14 Pro Max: what does Apple need to upgrade for you to buy it?
