While neither EA nor Apple have commented on the possible deal, rumors suggest that EA is looking to sell its business or at least merge with another company. This is after Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard for $ 68 billion earlier this year and Sony bought Bungie for $ 3.6 billion. Of course, the deal with EA should also be worth billions of dollars.
EA is responsible for some of the world’s most popular game franchises, including The Sims, SimCity, Need for Speed, Burnout, EA Sports FC (formerly FIFA), Plants vs. Zombies and others. The company is also working on a brand new NCAA College Football game.
EA and Apple
An interesting fact about Electronic Arts is that the founder of Trip Hawkins worked at Apple in the 1970s before he founded EA in 1982. EA later hired other former Apple employees and even invited Steve Wozniak to sit on the board of directors.
As Windows PCs have become immensely popular and game consoles have emerged as well, the Mac has never been viewed as a gaming machine. Still, some EA games like The Sims have always been available for Mac. In 2007, EA made even more titles available to Mac OS X users, such as Need for Speed: Carbon and Spore.
Apple has always worked closely with EA to promote games for iOS devices. Titles such as Plants vs. Zombies and even mobile versions of games like Need for Speed have been featured at Apple events many times. With all this in mind, it’s safe to assume that companies have good relationships.
While Apple never cared about games, the company introduced Apple Arcade in 2019. The platform offers many ad-free games for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV as part of a monthly subscription.
Apple Arcade, however, never became a hit. Apple is trying to push the platform forward with remastered versions of classic mobile games like Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja. But as I wrote last year, there is still a long way to go if Apple really wants to compete with real consoles like PlayStation or Xbox.
Apple Arcade is basically a mobile gaming platform, even though it’s also available on Mac and Apple TV. It lacks console-level triple-A games – and while Apple has a solid platform with iOS and Apple Silicon chips, the big developers don’t seem to be interested in Apple Arcade.
That could change if Apple buys EA. The company was able not only to introduce popular game franchises to its devices, but also to release some classic games on Apple Arcade. With EA in their hands, Apple could easily make the Apple Arcade more attractive than ever, while also showing developers that Macs and Apple TVs are also good gaming platforms.
Having its own studio game would also be a plus for Apple to promote the gaming capabilities of its alleged AR / VR headset.
Will this ever happen?
Unfortunately, the purchase of an EA by Apple seems unlikely. Despite Apple Arcade, Apple never seemed interested in owning their own games. Instead, it works with developers to get them to bring their games to Apple platforms.
There are also antitrust concerns. As Apple is under investigation for anti-competitive practices, acquiring one of the world’s largest gaming companies may not be a good idea at this point. If Apple does not want to give EA autonomy to continue releasing games to other platforms, it would definitely be a problem for the Cupertino company in the long run.
Ultimately, even though Apple would benefit from buying an EA, Apple is not a gaming company – it just isn’t in Apple’s DNA. I would like all EA titles to hit Apple platforms, but at the same time I do not trust that Apple will manage franchises that are so important to the industry.
