Final Fantasy XVI Aims To Grade M To Feature “Difficult Adult Themes”

A recent trailer for the Final Fantasy XVI hints on Game of Thronesepic style war story.

The following years Final Fantasy XVI is set to be the first numbered main game in the series to receive an M (mature) rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board. So says producer Naoki Yoshida, who told GameSpot in a recent interview that a higher age rating is needed to tell a story with “difficult adult topics.”

When answering a question about “alleged nudity” in a recent trailer for the game, Yoshida complained somewhat about the age ratings, which he considers to be[ing] lately, more and more restrictive about what can and cannot be shown ”. Acknowledging that these ratings are important to protecting younger players, Yoshida said a lower age rating could be “a bit of a stumbling block” to storytelling.

“Based on that assessment, you change the things you wanted to do in the game,” said Yoshida. “You wanted to show something, but since you have that certain rating you need to go to, you have to move the camera away. And that ends up making the whole experience feel a bit cheaper. ”

To get around this, Yoshida said Final Fantasy XVI will “pursue”[ing] evaluation matured in most regions where the game will be released ”. It’s not just about being “more brutal or … more explicit,” he said, but “exploring those more mature topics that struggle with the game.”

Early 2D in the USA Final Fantasy games generally received an ESRB E (all) or E-10 + (all 10 years or older) ratings. Entries for the series from the 3D era overwhelmingly achieve the maximum T-rating (for teenagers); Final Fantasy XVfor example, he received a T-grade for “Language, gentle blood, partial nudity, [and] Violence”. The ESRB content description noted “realistic fire” and punctured characters, as well as “some female characters [that] are depicted topless, with breasts devoid of discernible detail (ie no nipples). ”

Only two spin-off games using Final Fantasy the name has been rated M: 2015 in the past Final Fantasy Typ 0 HD and 2022 Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. The history of the latter game, however, did not seem to benefit from the relative lack of rating constraints; VentureBeat’s review summed up the critical consensus by describing “ugly graphics, shallow characters, and a pointless scenario.”

In other promotional interviews around Final Fantasy XVIPlanned summer release for 2023 on PS5 and PC, Yoshida has revealed that the game will depart from its predecessor by not offering players a free exploration of the “open world”. “To create a story that seems to span the globe and beyond, we chose to avoid designing an open world that limits us to one open world space, and instead focus on independent game design based on an area that can give players a better feel for real.” “Global” scale, said IGN Yoshida.

Yoshida also promised extreme variety in the fights in between Final Fantasy XVIpowerful Eikons that can summon talented characters in the game world. “For example, maybe one battle of Eikon vs. Eikon … will be like a 3D shooter. While another Eikon versus another Eikon, it is more like a pro wrestling match, and maybe even a third against one Eikon versus another Eikon will turn the whole area into a battlefield, “said Yoshida Game Informer. “Again, we haven’t used these systems again, and each of these Eikon vs. Eikon battles is unique and changes with each battle.”
