Montblanc Summit 3 is the latest Wear OS 3 smartwatch

Google introduced Wear OS 3 over a year ago, but it has only been available in one product since then. Now, ahead of the debut of Google’s own Pixel Watch, Wear OS 3 is making its way to a Qualcomm-based smartwatch on Montblanc Summit 3.

Wear OS 3 has so far only been available on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4. You can still see Wear OS 3 being a huge boost to the platform, but it didn’t make it clear what Google meant with the update.

Now we take a closer look at what Wear OS 3 brings to the table besides Samsung.

Montblanc Summit 3 is the first Wear OS 3 smartwatch since the Galaxy Watch 4. The luxury smartwatch works, which seems to be, at least in the very limited screenshots we can see, mostly with the Wear OS 3 version available.

In the press release announcing the Montblanc smartwatch, it doesn’t give too much detail about what the software has to offer, only advertises support for detailed directions on Google Maps – which would be a new version only supported on Wear OS 3 – as well as support for Google Pay.

Based on Wear OS by Google, Montblanc Summit 3 can be enhanced with all the applications necessary to meet the needs of its owner. Whether you’re at work, playing, on the go or at home, your new watch gives you a personalized, life-enhancing experience to help you make the most of your day. You can navigate the world with Google Maps detailed wrist navigation, or use Google Pay as a quick and easy way to pay in stores, wherever you are. Access a world of content anywhere, anytime – all from your Google Play smartwatch.

As shown below, Montblanc also includes a fitness app with sleep tracking, as well as several watch faces. The watch can also read the oxygen level in your blood. The experience runs on top of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 4100+ chip, the same chipset in Fossil Group’s latest smartwatches, including the Skagen Falster Gen 6 we reviewed earlier this year.

When it comes to physical appearance, the Montblanc Summit 3 has a titanium case in black, gray and “two-color”, with rubber options and leather straps. There is a rotating crown and two additional buttons. The watch also maintains a case size of 42mm.

We contacted Montblanc for more information on what battery life should be. Existing Montblanc smartwatches have approximately one day of battery life.

The Montblanc Summit 3 is priced at $ 1,290, and the smartwatch will be available to buyers starting July 15. You will be able to pick it up directly from the Montblanc website. Montblanc ships this watch this time in “sustainable paper packaging” and notes that the watch is equipped with “a wide range of support tools to maximize the full life-cycle experience as well as a battery replacement by Montblanc service.”

What about everyone else?

At this point, the main question is what’s next with Wear OS 3.

Google previously confirmed the list of smartwatches that will be eligible for the Wear OS 3 upgrade, which only consists of smartwatches using the Snapdragon Wear 4100 or 4100+ chipset. But as of today, we still don’t know when any of these updates will come.

However, with Montblanc Summit 3 extending Wear OS 3 over Samsung, it seems like the updates are just around the corner.
