How did the Apple Watch save my life – and could it have saved you?

Apple Watch can make calls, receive texts and navigate from A to B, but it can also save your life. Thanks to Apple’s various health and safety features, the Apple Watch can be used to protect you or someone else in several ways. I know because I experienced it the hard way.

I have type 1 diabetes and wear a continuous blood glucose meter that measures my blood sugar. If my blood sugar drops dangerously, I may pass out or fall into a diabetic coma. Luckily, my meter connects to my Apple Watch and sends notifications before it’s too late. This feature saved my life a few months ago.

I was awakened by the dangerously low blood sugar warning on my Apple Watch. I ran to the fridge, grabbed some orange juice, drank it, and passed out. I woke up a few minutes later because my blood sugar was back to normal. It was one of the scariest moments of my life, and thanks to Apple Watch alerts, I was able to fix my low blood sugar problem before it was too late.

In addition to blood sugar alerts, the Apple Watch can also help protect people in other ways. Here are some other life-saving features you can take advantage of:

Fall detection

Apple Watch can detect if you’ve survived a severe fall. The wearable device combines two tools: an accelerometer that detects speed and a gyroscope that detects the gravity of the Earth. Together, the two devices can alert your watch to a severe fall and activate an alert on the watch face asking if you want to call emergency services.

If the watch detects that you are moving, it waits for you to respond to the alert and does not automatically call for help. If it detects that you have not moved for about a minute, it will automatically connect. It will also send a message to your emergency contacts with your location informing them that your watch has detected a hard fall and has called the emergency services. Emergency contacts are taken from the medical ID programmed on the iPhone.

A medical card can come in handy in situations where you are around strangers, inconsistent and need help, or vice versa.

It displays information such as your name, date of birth, medical condition, medications, and emergency contacts.

Anyone can access this information on Apple Watch by holding down the button until it appears on the watch face. Swipe the tab and you will have access to your Medical ID information and you can call your emergency contact directly from this screen. The Medical ID can also be opened on the iPhone by holding both the Power button and the Volume up button at the same time.

Programming a Medical ID is easy. On your iPhone, go to Settings> Health> Medical ID.

Emergency SOS

Emergency SOS is a powerful feature that can save you from a terrifying situation. This feature allows you to quickly and easily call emergency services in the event of an emergency.

There are several ways to activate this on your Apple Watch. You can activate it in the same way as a medical ID by holding down the button and sliding your finger across “Emergency SOS”, or you can hold the button longer to activate it automatically. Upon activation, the watch will count down from five and emit a loud siren sound. You can cancel your request by releasing the button before the countdown is complete.

To activate Emergency SOS on your iPhone, hold down the power button and the volume up button at the same time, then slide your finger or hold the buttons longer and it will count down from 8 and start firing the siren. Alternatively, you can configure Emergency SOS to activate by quickly pressing the Power button five times. These activation settings can be programmed in Settings> Emergency SOS.

Meditation with Apple Fitness Plus


The meditations are in the Mindfulness app and require an Apple Fitness Plus account.

Meditation has many health benefits, including the ability to reduce the risk of hospitalization for coronary artery disease by 87%.

With an Apple Fitness Plus account, you can access the Guided Meditation list on Apple Watch from the Meditations app preinstalled. Meditations last from 5 to 20 minutes. An Apple Fitness Plus subscription costs $ 10 per month or $ 80 per year.
