Updates: Added information about the events of The Drive Home and The Stampede leading up to the official 2024 Mustang debut.
The era of the internal-combustion engined automobile is almost over, but it’s not over for the Ford Mustang. A new pony car will debut in September 2022, and while we don’t know Ford’s long-term plans for a permanent battle horse, the seventh generation will debut the same way the first generation did about 60 years ago: converting gasoline to noise. , in tire smoke and grin.
We’ve seen the hidden prototype of the Mustang in coupe and convertible format for almost several months now. Ford executives have also given some hints about what’s coming for the next-gen car, and some of those “hints” are straight-up confirmations. Hence, we already know a lot about the upcoming Mustang, from the styling cues to the mechanical components.
2024 Ford Mustang Powertrain
While the Dodge Challenger is on course to lose its V8 for the next generation, Ford Mustang buyers can still get one. An early spy video captured a V8 Mustang prototype on the go, apparently emitting a throaty soundtrack. Not long after, a Ford executive directly confirmed that yes, the new Mustang would retain its V8 engine. This almost certainly means a 5.0-liter V8, which can be massaged to produce a little more than the 450 horsepower currently offered.
However, there is a curious V8 wildcard that surfaced in 2020. The former president of Unifor, a major Canadian trade union associated with the auto industry, said Ford will introduce a new 6.8-liter V8 engine in “derivatives for the Mustang and F-“. 150.” This engine will come from Ford’s Windsor, Ontario assembly plant, as noted in a press release from Unifor. Ford never offered additional information on the engine, and nothing has been heard since. But it is difficult to ignore a public statement from the union president.
V8s aside, the turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine is expected to carry over from the current model. But what about electricity? That’s the big question surrounding the seventh-generation pony, as rumors say this could be the point when Ford introduces the plug-in hybrid Mustang with all-wheel drive. Nothing of the sort has been confirmed or teased by Ford, so at least, we don’t expect anything to be electrified at launch.
Regardless of the engine, row-your-own enthusiasts can still manage power the old-fashioned way. Ford has confirmed that the new Mustang will offer a six-speed manual transmission in addition to an automatic.
2024 Ford Mustang Styling
Ford isn’t rocking the boat when it comes to the Mustang’s design. Our exclusive 2024 Ford Mustang renderings peel back the camouflage from several prototype scenes and leaked images to reveal the slightly larger grille for the GT model, dropping further into the lower fascia in a similar fashion to the current Mustang Shelby GT500. Corner vents should also be larger, and headlights adopt a thinner, cleaner look. On the EcoBoost model, the grille should remain the same but there may be smaller vents in the lower fascia.
In profile, don’t expect the new Mustang to differ significantly from the outgoing model. The wheelbase looks the same, and the proportions of the pony car – a tall hood up front and a fast-racked fastback at the rear – look very similar. The new car’s C-pillar feels slim, leaving more room for the large side windows. And though we’ve yet to get a clear view of the new ‘Stang’s taillights, we’d be absolutely shocked if Ford doesn’t keep the iconic three-barreled vertical design.
As for the upgrade package and trim levels, we have already seen a prototype sporting aggressive exhaust tips, upgraded brakes and super-sticky tyres. All of this confirms the availability of the GT Performance Package, and special edition trim like the California Special should eventually arrive. A higher-performance Shelby model is expected to return, though it will likely be a bit further down the road. There’s no word yet on the availability of limited-run models like the Mach 1, Boss, or Bullitt.
2024 Ford Mustang Interior
Little is known about the new Mustang’s greenhouse, but it should retain a traditional layout. Regardless of transmission, a lever will rise from the center console to select gear. A large center touchscreen display will sit atop the console in a simplified dash that eliminates some – but not all – touch controls. A separate digital display for the driver is expected, but the Mustang interior spy pictures show that they will not be attached under a bigger screen like we are seeing with brands like BMW. The availability of advanced technology like Ford’s Blue Cruise system is unknown at this time.
2024 Ford Mustang Price
Pricing information for the seventh generation Mustang is not yet available. The current model starts at $28,865 with a six-speed manual transmission mated to EcoBoost. The V8-powered GT starts at $39,440, also equipped with a six-speed stick. It’s safe to assume that pricing for the 2024 Mustang will be higher, but given the steady decline in Mustang sales in recent years, we’d be surprised if Ford launches the new model with a significantly higher MSRP.
