NFL Preseason Week 2: Commanders vs. Chiefs, start time on Saturday, August 20

The game

The Kansas City Chiefs host the Washington Commanders at the Arrowhead Sadium in Week 2 of the NFL preseason. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 pm Arrowhead Time. The match will be televised nationally on NFL Network — locally at KSHB/41).

In 2021, the Chiefs posted a 12-5 record which gave them the second seed in the AFC postseason. After defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills in the playoffs, the team staged its fourth consecutive AFC Championship, but fell to the Cincinnati Bengals 27-24 in overtime that season. The Chiefs enter 2022 with two of their offensive superstars, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce, returning to the roster. The team is expected to use all of these pass receivers, along with wide receiver Mecole Hardman, to establish a more balanced passing attack in 2022.

The Commanders finished last season outside the playoffs with a 7-10 record, putting them third in the NFC East. They opened the preseason last Saturday with a 23-21 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Starting quarterback for 2021 Taylor Heinicke remains with the team but is now the backup behind Carson Wentz, whom the Commanders acquired in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts in March. In April, the team also selected North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell in the fifth round of the NFL Draft.

Now in his third season as Commanders head coach, Ron Rivera was an assistant coach to Kansas City head coach Andy Reid during his first few years leading the Philadelphia Eagles.
