Pokémon GO is joining the 2022 Pokémon World Cup celebration in the old-fashioned good way – throwing new enemies at you!

These special Challengers World Championship Challengers are available to tackle the Pokémon GO World Championship research mission over time, which you can earn by redeeming one of the many cheat codes given away during the live stream.

In this guide, we show you how to find and fight against contenders for the World Cup as well how to get the 2022 Pikachu Pokémon World Championship.

Challengers of the Pokémon GO World Championship

Where can I find contenders?

From now to 20:00 (local time) on August 23as long as you use one of the Pokémon World Championship research timecodes, you’ll be able to find and challenge World Championship Challenger contenders in a PokéStop near you.

As with Team GO Rocket Grunts and Rocket Leaders, these contenders come up frequently so if you don’t have a World Cup Challenger around, it should show up soon enough.

You’ll know if the PokéStop has a World Championship Challenger waiting for you like The PokéStop will move like Rocket Grunt PokéStops, but without their distinctive darker color.

In our experience, while walking around a residential area with a few PokéStops, we had no trouble finding Challengers as they spawned nearby relatively often. As we fought on, another one that was there before disappeared, so it looks like they might disappear as well.

How to fight a challenger

Fighting the World Cup Challenger is the same as any other Pokémon GO fight, and each time you defeat it, it will contribute to your planned World Cup research mission.

Six different Challengers will appear during the event, but each has several different Pokémon in their arsenal, so you might not fight the same team twice. Alternatively, you can fight multiple players of the same Challenger type.

World Cup contenders do not use shields while you have two to use, so every fight should be fairly easy!

Challengers Pokémon teams

As mentioned above, each of the six World Cup contenders you can face will have several different Pokémon to fight against.

Pokémon GO veterans who have built a strong and diverse selection of Pokémon to use in battle won’t have any problems during these fights – we’ll defeat Challengers relatively easily using the Pokémon team recommended in the game. Make sure your team is fully healthy of course before the fight and make sure you use your two dials strategically.

Here is a list of potential teams for the World Cup Challengers (thanks to The Silph Road subreddit for bringing it together!)
