WWE SmackDown Results, Recap, Numbers: Drew McIntyre Messages Roman Reigns, Sami Zayn Steals the Show

The landmark 1200th episode of SmackDown was Sami Zayn’s Evening. The former intercontinental champion took a big step in building confidence with undisputed universal WWE champion Roman Reigns. Zayn also received a hero’s welcome in his hometown of Montreal.

The construction of Clash at the Castle continued when Reigns and Drew McIntyre finally faced each other. Zayn performed in The Usos’ absence, but it wasn’t enough to crush McIntyre’s mind. Meanwhile, Karrion Kross continued to function from the shadows.

A new No. 1 contender for Gunther’s Intercontinental Champion was crowned in a Fatal Five-Way match. Gunther takes on the winner at Clash at the Castle. Elsewhere on SmackDown, another tag team advanced in a tournament for the vacant women’s tag team titles.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from the Bell Center in Montreal, Quebec.

Sami Zayn finds favor with Roman Reigns

Zayn had repeatedly attempted to sit down with the champion but was refused by The Usos. The absence of the tag team champions this week opened the door for Zayn to sit down with the boss of The Bloodline. The pair had a productive meeting when Reigns and Zayn agreed that Jey Uso had been hostile in recent weeks. Reigns asked Zayn to let Kevin Owens know that the “Tribal Chief” doesn’t owe anyone anything. This was in response to Owens claiming Reigns owed him one for assaulting McIntyre on Monday night’s Raw.

Kross and Scarlett starred in an apocalyptic promo, in which they described Reigns and McIntyre as two sides of the same coin. Both are “chosen” by the company, but Kross stated that McIntyre had failed where Reigns succeeded.

Sheamus for sure. Happy Corbin, Sami Zayn, Ricochet and Madcap Moss via pinfall after cracking Corbin with a Brogue Kick. Sheamus will now challenge Gunther for the intercontinental title at Clash at the Castle. Zayn received a hero’s welcome in his hometown of Montreal. His biggest flurry was a swan dive out, plus a Michinoku Driver to Ricochet and Blue Thunder Bomb to Moss for nearly two seconds. The medical staff cared for Zayn after he allegedly injured his shoulder after being crushed by Sheamus’ mid-rope White Noise. A great series of counters between Sheamus, Ricochet and Moss was well received by the crowd. Zayn returned in the closing moments of the match. His recovery sparked another massive response from the live audience. He nearly pinned Ricochet after landing a Helluva Kick, but Corbin yanked Zayn away from a pinfall on Ricochet. The finish came shortly after when Sheamus clocked Corbin with a match-ending Brogue Kick.

McIntyre grabbed his coat before his showdown with Reigns and found Kross’s doomsday hourglass under the coat.

In the closing segment of SmackDown, Reigns reminded everyone that he carries the company on his back, despite his weekly inactivity. McIntyre interrupted him, insisting that Reigns didn’t deserve to be champion. A fight broke out between the rivals. McIntyre launched at Reigns with a Claymore Kick, but Zayn took the bullet. Reigns tried to take advantage of the deception. The champion prepared for a big superman punch, but ended up eating the Brogue Kick. SmackDown closed with McIntyre lifting the championships from Reigns.

SmackDown continues to take advantage of three concepts: weekly storyline continuity, storyline development through multiple segments in one episode, and weaving several storylines together. Zayn’s sit-down with Reigns was an important development as Zayn continues to add value to The Bloodline. Doomsday and the mention of Kevin Owens were beautiful, subtle reminders of what’s going on in the WWE universe. The reaction of the crowd to Zayn’s match was the biggest highlight of the evening. The energy of the Montreal crowd was infectious. The Reigns-McIntyre promo and brawl had fire, but didn’t do much to advance the feud. Grade B
