Last night we finally got a look at the next main game in Yakuza series, Like a dragon 8and the trailer of the announcement immediately got people racing online memes making fun of a young new hairstyle the longtime, steadfast hero of the series, Kiryu Kazuma. Though it’s nice to know that grandpa-kuza is in new Yakuza game, I couldn’t help but ask aloud: Kiryu baby, why are you still here? Haven’t we said goodbye yet?
While Yakuza studio RGG summit 2022Sega announced three new slaps Yakuza Games: Like a dragon 8; Like a dragon: They were, a historical spin-off of the samurai series set in a fictionalized version of Kyoto in the 1860s; and Like the dragon Gaiden: The man who erased his name, which will present the events of Kiryu’s life in between Yakuza 6: A Song of Life and Like a dragon 8. Although we already knew about it LaD8 the game was comingthe teaser trailer confirmed that the game will feature dual heroes in Ichiban Kasuga and Kiryu.
Having two or even more playable heroes is nothing new to Yakuza series. Yakuza 0, Jakuza 4and Jakuza 5 in all of them you play from the perspective of unnamed Kiryu characters. While I’m excited to see Kiryu set of movements reinvented in Like a dragon‘s Dragon Quest-like turn-based combatnarratively, Kiryu’s return ignores the many narrative goodbyes he has already received throughout the series and highlights how dog shit Jakuza 6a game advertised as his latest adventure.
Before I get to spoilers, this one needs to get some airing: Kiryu’s hair in Like a dragon 8 he is angry. His hairdresser had failed all of Japan, giving the 51-year-old man frosted gray hair. In addition to sports its best vergil z the devil can cry cosplayI assume there’s a very simple answer to why he’s wearing this new, mid-aged crisis look. You see, in Jakuza 6Kiryu fights a guy named Joon-gi HanKorean guy with a haircut similar to the one Kiryu is rocking Jakuza 8announcement trailer. It turns out that Joon-gi Han is an identity passed down to people throughout the series and Kiryu rocks his hair Like a dragon 8 may mean that he has now adopted that nickname for himself. But let’s hope she’s just getting some fashion inspiration from him, perhaps to dress up while doing his secret job in the star dust, the Kamuroucho home club. Seeing Kiryu being friends with the guys who run the cabaret, it would not be impossible for him, a man known for his terrible disguises, to think that this appearance is incognito cheating someone.
Now why is this a bit frustrating? Like a dragonIchiban’s hero must share Kiryu’s spotlight in his next adventure.
Across the main line Yakuza series, Kiryu received three goodbyes. In Jakuza 5last sceneKiryu lies bloody in the streets in the arms of his adopted daughter, Harukaafter a hard battle. The camera then moves from his limp body and greets you with one word “Fin”. If you were a gamer in the west in 2012, this ending basically sounds like developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio said, “Yes, Kiryu may be dead. Break the god.
However, it turned out that Kiryu’s potential death was a hoax. The dude is as durable as the Nokia and 2016 phone Yakuza 6: A Song of Life he saw his glorious return. However, the game was advertised as Kiryu’s last adventure, his true goodbye. Unfortunately, the ending of this last adventure was nonsense.

Culmination Jakuza 6the story shows that Kiryu abandons Haruka and her “still has this new baby scent”, Haruto. In a fat skull, Kiryu justified his departure as a way to protect his family of orphans from persecution as a result of his criminal antics. Seeing Kiryu abandon those he loved after spending 60 hours struggling to restore the family he had made for himself, I felt utterly contrary to his resolve to be with them at all costs, which is his hallmark throughout the series . Needless to say, Jakuza 6The ending not only spoiled the experience of playing his would-be “ultimate adventure,” but also made his characterization feel criminally mismanaged up to that point.
But no one has ever really leftand 2021 Jakuza: Like a dragon saw Kiryu’s big comeback to the show as a super-strong side character to assist the protagonists Ichiban Kasuga at the end of the game. In a chapter literally named Passing the torchKiryu, you know, passes the torch to Ichiban at the end of their fight without a macho shirt. Fighting serves two purposes, allowing Ichiban to release some energy before doing something reckless, and symbolizes Kiryu giving the loving JRPG hero his seal of approval as the series’ new hero. I think that was a fucking lie.
For me, Kiryu returns as a double hero in Jakuza 8 puts a lot of pressure Like the dragon Gaiden: the man who erased his name to walk back effectively Jakuza 6there’s a half-baked ending and smooths out why the next three Yakuza games will create a series of “Oops! All Kiryu ”for the next few years. Hopefully, the presence of Kiryu does not make us perceive Ichiban suffering from Worf effect go ahead.
