Modern Warfare 2 beta release time, access to code explained

The Modern Warfare 2 Open Beta is inevitable, giving players a taste of the shooting and maps from this year’s Call of Duty.

As with previous Call of Duty beta releases, PlayStation players get Early Access the first weekend, while other platforms will roll out the second weekend, including the Open Access period for everyone.

If you want to come in earlier you need to Access to the Modern Warfare 2 beta – which is available in many ways.

To help prepare you for the launch of the open beta, you’ll find beta release times for any platform you play on.

When will the Modern Warfare 2 beta start? Modern Warfare 2 beta release times and dates

There are two weekends in September where players can join the beta, the first for PlayStation and other platforms players next week.

The beta start times both weekends plus Early Access and Open Beta at all times are as follows:

  • Great Britain: 6:00 PM (BST)
  • Europe: 19:00 (CEST)
  • US East Coast: 1:00 PM (EDT)
  • US West Coast: 10:00 (PDT)

Here are the specific schedules for each weekend:

Weekend 1 (PlayStation Only)

  • Early Access – from Friday 16th to Saturday 17th September
  • Open Beta – from Sunday 18 to Tuesday 20 September

Weekend 2 (all platforms, crossplay support)

  • Early Access (Xbox + PC), Open Beta (PlayStation) – from Thursday 22 to Friday 23 September
  • Open Beta (All Platforms) – Saturday 24 to Monday 26 September

Early Access means players can jump into the game if they pre-ordered the game or have access to the code in some other way – more is explained below.

Then, a few days later each weekend, the Open Beta will be available – first for PlayStation players and then the second weekend on all platforms.

How do I get early access to Modern Warfare 2 beta?

There are two main ways to access the Modern Warfare 2 Open Beta every weekend:

If you’re pre-ordering, you’ll receive game instructions via email when the beta goes live – which will require you to redeem a redeemable code on the official Call of Duty website to select your platform of choice.

If you pre-order from PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store or, you’ll automatically get early access to the Modern Warfare 2 Open Beta.

Plus, if you pre-ordered the Vault edition, you’ll get a few extra features to use in the beta – which are detailed in the next section.

Access to the Modern Warfare 2 Open Beta

Additionally, on Sunday, August 7, there was a Call of Duty League Championship Weekend stream, where by watching and linking your Activision account to YouTube, you had a chance to win a code for the Modern Warfare 2 open beta.

It is possible that Activision will introduce additional ways to access the beta – such as via social media – once the beta begins.

If you can’t get the code, don’t worry – all players have an open period that they look forward to in the second half of each weekend.

What’s in the Modern Warfare 2 beta?

The Modern Warfare 2 beta will feature a range of multiplayer maps, modes and weapons.

Several 6v6 maps will be available during the beta phase – Valderas Museum, Farm 19 and Mercando Las Almas.

There will also be one “Ground War” 32v32 map, Sarrif Bay, which is also one of the points of interest of the Warzone 2.0 map.

As for the modes, in addition to Team Deathmatch and Domination, there will be three new additions; Knockout (a round-based 6v6 mode where you eliminate an enemy team or hold a pack to win), Prisoner Rescue (each 6v6 team has a prisoner to protect) and Invasion (a 32v32 elimination deathmatch with the addition of AI controlled enemies). Everything will be playable during the beta.

Meanwhile, if you pre-ordered the Vault Modern Warfare 2 edition, as well as access to the beta, you’ll also get access to all four Operators – Ghost, Farah, Price, and Soap, each wearing a special masked outfit – and the FJX Weapons Vault Cinder “.

Modern Warfare 2 Beta Rewards

There are a total of 10 exclusive rewards to unlock in both the beta and the full game depending on the level – including two weapon schematics and an Operator skin.

These are:

  • Level 10: “Operation First Blood” stick
  • Level 15: Side Smash Weapon Blueprint

As you can see in the image above, while PlayStation players can start unlocking the first five rewards during the first weekend, all rewards can be unlocked on the second weekend – meaning all players have access to everything.
