Apple has confirmed that customers activating new iPhones may encounter an issue where device activation does not go over Wi-Fi during initial setup, saying the problem is “investigated.”


In the note seen by MacGossipApple says there is “a known issue with iOS 16 that could affect device activation on open Wi-Fi networks.” To fix this, Apple says customers should select “Connect to a Mac or iTunes Computer” in the initial iOS entry process when prompted to connect to a Wi-Fi network, then go back to the previous screen and try over Wi-Fi again until activation is successful.

In a support document, Apple informs new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro customers that “iMessage and FaceTime may not complete activation” until they update their new iPhones to iOS 16.0.1.
