Apple reportedly repeatedly presents the display notch of the “pill and punch” iPhone 14 Pro without Dynamic Island, even though it is not an option on the device.

Apple support document apparently showing a “pill and punch” cutout design.

In a new support document released yesterday titled “Use an Always-On Display with an iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max,” Apple clearly shows the device’s two display cutouts with and without a useful display area between them. This is at least the third time the project has been spotted from official Apple sources.
There was evidence that Apple was clearly using the purported “pill and punch” design first spotted in a preliminary artwork that was posted on the Apple website after the “Far Away” event. Shortly thereafter, Apple posted development resources for the iPhone 14 Pro showing the display cutouts themselves, before re-uploading the resource correctly showing Dynamic Island.

The recurring bug is interesting considering there is currently no way to disable Dynamic Island and allow content to be displayed normally between the two display cutouts. The graphics are striking as well, considering that for most of the “iPhone 14 Pro” rumor cycle, the device was supposed to look exactly like this. Rumors of Dynamic Island and the two display notches appearing as one “pill” thanks to software enhancements did not come until a week before the Apple event.

Bugs may indicate that Dynamic Island was supposed to be an optional feature or was even a fairly late decision in the development of the iPhone 14 Pro. It seems most likely that due to the muted nature of Apple’s internal structure, web design, development resources, and support documents were not aware of Dynamic Island until immediately prior to the Apple event.
When the information about Dynamic Island took hold, it was assumed that earlier rumors of a design with two visible cutouts on the display were simply due to hardware leaks and the software was still stuck tightly. A recurring illustration by Apple of the alleged design suggests that the initial understanding of the appearance of the display cutout may have been more official than previously thought.
