iPhone 14 launches a live blog: reviews, deals, and everything else you need to know

One of the questions I got in the YouTube review of my iPhone 14 Pro Max was whether Dynamic Island is hard to reach with one hand. My answer was yes, but Apple already has a solution to make things easier.

As reported by 9to5Mac (opens in a new tab)The iOS 16.1 beta integrates Dynamic Island with the Reachability feature in the settings. So when you enable this feature, the island will actually move along with the rest of the display halfway down the screen. This is a useful upgrade.

Like any new iPhone, the iPhone 14 is not immune to launch issues. An iPhone error 14 initially prevented users from configuring their devices over Wi-Fi. But this problem has apparently been resolved.

According to The Verge (opens in a new tab), Apple has released iOS 16.0.1 update, which “should fix any activation or migration issues faced by owners of the new iPhone.” However, be aware that users may need to update and restore their phones with a Mac or PC to fix this problem.

Oops! It seems Apple itself was aware of rumors that the iPhone 14 Pro series would have double notches at the top of the screen. As reported by MacRumors (opens in a new tab)Apple shows a punch and pill cutout for the iPhone 14 in various supporting documents, even though the new Dynamic Island uses a single notch.

iPhone 14 vs Samsung Galaxy S22

As good as the iPhone 14, it’s not necessarily the best phone in its price range. Example: Samsung Galaxy S22. Samsung’s $ 799 phone offers a 120Hz display and a 3x telephoto lens, two features that the regular iPhone 14 lacks.

Here’s a quick rundown of the four ways the Galaxy S22 beats the iPhone 14. But we also discuss where Apple beats Samsung. In addition, we have a full start this weekend to announce the final winner.

With every new iPhone launch, you’ll find that Apple is giving the ax to some older phones. Be sure to check out our review of the iPhones Apple Retired (opens in a new tab) after the release of the iPhone 14.

No more iPhone 11, no more iPhone 12 mini. The departure of the iPhone 11 hurts the most, as Apple now doesn’t have a solid iPhone worth under $ 500 with a screen size of 6 inches or larger.

iPhone 14 versus iPhone 14 Pro Max

The iPhone 14 is a good phone, but you really should know about all the differences between it and the iPhone 14 Pro before you buy it. Our iPhone 14 versus iPhone 14 Pro (opens in a new tab) comparing it all breaks down so you’ll be able to make the most informed decision.

This is the crux of the matter. The iPhone 14 Pro has many exclusive features including the always-on display, Dynamic Island, and a 48MP main camera. But it is not everything.

We’ve just completed a few more battery tests on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and we have some good news. Apple’s 6.7-inch flagship lasted an average of 13 hours and 39 minutes, which puts this phone on our list of the best batteries.

Anything over 11.5 hours is considered excellent. Stay tuned for more results for all new iPhones!

Early benchmarks prior to the arrival of the iPhone 14 suggested it might not be as powerful as people expected.

We didn’t have to worry though – as our own benchmarks tell a completely different story about how powerful the A16 Bionic really is.

In short: Apple has consolidated its lead in the area of mobile systems on chips as the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are the fastest and most powerful phones ever. Learn the full story in our iPhone 14 benchmark report.

Action Mode is another new feature of the iPhone 14, and the best way to show it is to just watch the footage with and without it being turned on. And it is quite simple; just press the button in the camera app while recording video and you should see smooth and stable video as if you were using a gimbal.

By running along this slope in the track, you can see that the video is much more stable with the action mode enabled. When turned off, it looks like I’m twisting wildly from side to side. Our iPhone 14 Pro Max review has more comparisons to check.

Have you ever wondered what the inside of the iPhone 14 Pro Max looks like? No, don’t pry up the back of your new phone, it’s not a good idea. Instead, take a look at the video above on how to smash an iPhone 14 Pro Max by PBKreviews (opens in a new tab)which takes the new device apart piece by piece to compare it with the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

It’s fascinating if you’re interested in what’s on your phone, not just what it can do.

Emergency SOS via satellite on iPhone 14

The Emergency SOS option via iPhone 14 satellite is another new feature for the latest Apple phone, and this one is available on all models, not just the Pro version.

It currently has limited global coverage as it is only available in the United States and Canada, but the good news is looming: iPhone 14 satellite connectivity may arrive in more countries this year.

The dynamic island of the iPhone 14 Pro

The dynamic island is also interactive. A long press of this area brings up more controls, such as playback, so you don’t have to constantly jump between multiple apps or swipe down from the top of the screen.

It gets better. When third-party developers take advantage of the Apple Live Activites API, you’ll be able to see your Lyft ride status, your favorite NFL team’s score, or the ETA of your food delivery order. It’s a smart solution and it worked well in our tests.

Another great new feature of the iPhone 14 is Dynamic Island, which can be found on the two Pro models. You will hear this word a lot, so let’s explain what it means. Dynamic Island is a cutout replacement on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

This pill-shaped cutout not only houses the TrueDepth camera and Face ID technology; provides information and changes shape on the fly. You can start a countdown timer and see the countdown clock at the top of the screen or the album cover for the music playing, or the next rotation for Apple Maps.

By the name, you’d think the always-on display would always be… well, on. But Apple has confirmed that there are cases where the always-on display will be temporarily turned off.

There are eight of them, including when your iPhone is face down, in your pocket or bag and Low Power Mode is on, with the idea that disabling this feature at this time will help you extend your phone’s battery life.

A few bugs and a few (inevitable) lags aside, that’s pretty much all the good news when it comes to the iPhone 14 range. In fact, there are so many positives – especially with the Pro models – that it’s hard to know where to start.

But to pick one at random, how about iPhone 14 Pro forever on display?

This shows a low brightness version of the current lock screen, allowing you to check notifications, iOS 16 lock screen widgets, and of course the clock.

It’s something Android phones have had a version for a while, but neither looks as nice or shows as much at once as Apple’s AOD developed.

There is also a bug that supposedly affects iMessage and FaceTime. According to 9to5Mac (opens in a new tab)this can prevent users from receiving messages and calls or sending iMessages with generic green bubbles to other iPhone users.

Luckily, there’s a fix for this, which we detailed in our bug article on the day the iPhone 14 was released.

So what can you expect if you have a shiny new iPhone 14 in gloves today? Well, mostly a lot of very good things, but also a few minor negatives.

We’ll start with the negatives just because they’ve been freshly reported. For example, there seems to be an iPhone activation error 14 that may cause the setup process to fail for some people.

Comes from MacRumors (opens in a new tab)which says he saw an internal Apple note where the iPhone 14 won’t connect to open Wi-Fi networks during setup. The solution is to use a PC or Mac for this part of the process, which isn’t the most elegant solution. Hope Apple fixes this problem quickly.

iPhone 14 versus iPhone 14 Pro Max

The fact that so many people want their hands on iPhone 14 Pro models is no surprise – in fact, we think the difference between the base model and its more expensive sibling is greater than ever.

Why? Well, there are plenty of reasons for this, including the fact that the Pro replaces the dividing notch with a really clever Dynamic Island, a camera upgrade to a 48MP sensor, and increased battery life.

Here our global editor Mark Spoonauer explains why the iPhone 14 Pro is so much better than the iPhone 14.

The situation is also not just bad for people looking to buy some iPhone 14 Pro models today – even some people who pre-ordered these phones are told that they may not get the phone on time.

According to 9to5Mac, many iPhone 14 pre-orders were delayed at 11am. Many contacted them to express their frustration at the estimated delivery date that had pushed back to September 23rd. And some were even postponed to September 30.

For example, in the UK, where Apple stores are already open, I can order my iPhone 14 Pro now and pick it up tomorrow at my local store. However, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is showing as unavailable for pickup at any of the 12 closest stores.

There are no such problems with the basic iPhone 14: it is readily available for pickup tomorrow in many colors and configurations.

Model Estimated Delivery Date (US) Estimated Delivery Date (UK)
iPhone 14 September 20 September 21
iPhone 14 Plus October 7 October 7
iPhone 14 Pro October 17-24 October 18-25
iPhone 14 Pro Max October 24-31 October 25 – November 1

Good morning and welcome to the live blog on the day of the iPhone 14 release of the Tom’s Guide.

Let’s start by discussing the waiting times. As the table above shows, some new iPhone 14 models are much easier to get than others. For example, if you order a basic iPhone 14 today, it should arrive as early as next week. But if you want an iPhone 14 Pro Max, you may have to wait until the end of October to get it!

In-store availability is potentially better, but it will depend on what model you want and where you are located. Either way, it’s clear that the Pro models are more in demand this year than ever.
