Developers share materials in the course of work in solidarity with Rockstar after GTA 6 leaks

Over the weekend, Rockstar was faced with a huge leak, which saw numerous screenshots and videos of GTA 6 development with missing resources and features appeared on the web.

After seeing this leaked material, some corners of the Internet decided to use it as ammunition to criticize Rockstar’s unfinished work.

โ€œIf you knew how game development works, you would know that visuals are one of the first things we do. This game takes four years of planning and creating. What you see is almost exactly what you will get. The next year is mission coding and debugging. All the back room stuff. It looks like an ass, โ€said one Twitter user.

This is not the point. In fact, 3D character artist Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart Xavier Coelho-Kostolny called it “the greatest, extremely confident, but has no idea what they’re talking about. [they’ve] ever seen. ”

Now, many developers and members of the gaming industry are releasing clips of the progress of work, confirming that the GTA 6 content we disclosed does not indicate the quality of the final product.

Control’s lead designer Paul Ehreth shared a video of the award-winning game Remedy on YouTube.

Accompanying the clip, they wrote with a grain of salt: “Since artwork is the first finished thing in a video game, and Control has won multiple awards for art excellence, here’s the footage from the beginning of development.”

Meanwhile, Uncharted 4’s co-host designer, Kurt Margenau, shared footage from the game’s famous jeep chase scene in its “blockmesh vs art blockmesh vs final art” stages, commenting that “this is what art looks like for a video game being created.”

Staying with Naughty Dog, here’s The Last of Us at the beginning.

Independent developer Massive Monster shared early footage from the recent release of Cult of the Lamb. This clearly shows the rudimentary design that shows up in the early stages of game development.

Immortality director Sam Barlow tweeted two photos of his latest game, stating: “FYI, here’s what Immortality looked like for the first 2 years as we focused on balancing AI and gameplay versus how it was delivered.”

Meanwhile, journalist Cian Maher shared an early photo of one of the Thunderjaws Horizon Zero Dawn. “Also yes, this is a weapon, it was made using Killzone resources because the games don’t look like a finished product until very late in development,” he wrote in another tweet.

A Destiny Excelhedge fan shared the following photos from the Bungie sci-fi MMO. In their words: “Never liberate a game developer, especially when [you] know nothing [about] their job. Below is [Destiny’s] early setup of Alpha vs. Destiny Rise of Iron โ€.

Meanwhile, Bit Loom Games shared their Tray Racers comparison showing the big difference between the game’s progress in 2020 and 2022.

Finally, while this God of War (2018) movie was not recently released by the developer, this compilation of Sony Santa Monica materials shows how many stages the game has to go through before the final product is actually ready for release.
