Trombone Champ is the new favorite online video game. The developer never expected toots to go viral.

Trombone Champ is the latest video game players can’t put down – even if the people around them wanted to.

Developed by Holy Wow Studios, the rhythm-based video game is similar to Guitar Hero, but turns a guitar into a trombone. The avatar plays the trombone while the player moves the mouse up and down to synchronize with the sounds on the screen. The mouse movements are reversed, which adds another level of difficulty.

The game, which was released on September 15, went viral this week after people online – from video game reviewers to actual trombonists – began to publish the recordings they played on it.

Result? Much rolling, to songs like the national anthem and Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, and then people’s laughter on the internet.

Dan Vecchitto, the game’s creator, said he never expected it to become the new source of laughter on the Internet. In fact, Vecchitto, whose full-time web design job, expected a much smaller group of enthusiasts.

“Of course I am very happy about it and I am a little relieved,” said Vecchitto with a laugh. “I wasn’t quite sure what the reaction would be because … it almost always sounds bad.”

Vecchitto, who said he makes video games as a hobby, doesn’t even play the trombone.

The idea for Trombone Champ came up four years ago, inspired by traditional arcade cabinets. Vecchitto said he envisioned a cabinet that instead of a plastic light gun contained a rubber trombone with a movable slide attached to it.

“I thought it would be fun to imagine someone trying to move the slider on a giant rubber trombone to match those giant, wavy lines flying across the screen,” he said.

I wasn’t sure what the answer would be because… it almost always sounds wrong.

According to Vecchitto, who worked on it in the evenings and on weekends, the development of the game was relatively smooth.

But the difficult part for Vecchitto was that he wanted to find songs that would be enjoyable for the player without having to pay royalties. Almost all music is classical and is in the public domain.

The game features one original song by a London artist Max Tundracalled “Limbo with a long tail”.

Initially, Vecchitto said he was concerned that real trombonists might be offended by the game. However, he said, most of the trombonists he heard from liked it.

“A GAME IN WHICH YOU PLAY THE PUZZLE?!?!? I think Trombone Champ was literally made for me “- presenter and trombonist G4 Austin Creed wrote on Twitter.

YouTuber Trombone Timo, a professional trombonist who has a lot of interest on social media, also liked to play.

“Overall, this game is a complete crap – kidding,” he said in his video review. “It is wonderful.”

His only complaints? That said, the trombonist doesn’t move his whole body to reach certain notes like the in-game avatar does.

“Also” trombonist? ” – he added, referring to the player’s name in the game. “Come on … [it’s] trombonist! “

Many said the game made them laugh out loud.

“The master of the trombone is so fun because the sound of the counterfeit trombone and the fart is almost the same and therefore almost as fun, especially with the repetitions” – one person tweeted.

“The trombone master is unbelievable” – game writer Joseph Yaden tweeted. “Funniest game I’ve ever played.”

“I saw a video from a PC player … my stomach hurts from such strong laughter … I bought the game over and over again … I played it myself … now my index finger hurts and my stomach hurts even more” – wrote one of the reviewers, a distribution services platform on Steam video games.

Lots of tweeted song requests they hoped to see on “Trombone Champ” one day. Some suggested the game is an “immediate” contender for the Game of the Year title.

Vecchitto said that due to the overwhelming reaction he will continue to update and improve on what he considers to be the first ever trombone focused game.

The game, which costs $ 14.99, is available for PC via Steam. Vecchitto said he plans to release a Mac version and eventually a console version. The game is currently only available in English, but Vecchitto has plans to add other languages.

“I always knew the idea was funny,” said Vecchitto. “But I’m still really surprised at how much it has spread.”
