Alienware QD-OLED monitor chooses open standards over G-Sync, it’s $ 200 cheaper

Alienware today announced a new QD-OLED monitor SKU that looks a lot like the Alienware AW3423DW, which was released this spring for $ 1,300. The AW3423DWF shares many of the same specs, but bypasses the certification and Nvidia G-Sync hardware in favor of AMD’s and VESA’s open standards for fighting screen tearing, while costing $ 200 less than its predecessor.

Like the AW3423DW, the AW3423DWF uses Samsung’s QD-OLED technology. It is a form of OLED that uses a blue self-emitting layer as a light source that passes through a layer of quantum dots. The main goal is better color coverage, including more consistent colors at different brightness levels, combined with the deep blacks and amazing contrast that OLED displays are known for.

The specifications of the 34.18-inch model AW3423DWF and AW3423DW are closely matched, including 3440 × 1440 resolution, 1800R curve, 99.3% DCI-P3 and 149% sRGB color coverage, refresh rate up to 165 Hz via DisplayPort and 100 Hz via HDMI 2.0, and a gray to gray (GtG) response time of 0.1 ms.

But while the AW3423DW uses G-Sync Ultimate, which confirms 1000 nits brightness with HDR, and also fights screen tearing when paired with an Nvidia GPU, the new AW3423DWF uses AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and VESA AdaptiveSync standards.

FreeSync Premium Pro from AMD works with AMD GPUs, including the latest Xbox and PlayStation consoles. The Premium Pro qualifier confirms that the feature works with HDR (the monitor is VESA DisplayHDR TrueBlack400 certified) and adds low frame rate compensation, which displays frames multiple times to make up for when the frame rate drops below the lowest supported refresh rate for your monitor.

VESA announced its AdaptiveSync certification program in May. Includes testing for judder, dropped frames, and more exhaustive GtG response time testing which takes into account 20 GtG combinations.

AdaptiveSync VESA requires functionality with refresh rates of at least 60-144Hz and a 5ms GtG response time according to VESA testing. Meanwhile, support for Nvidia, AMD, and Intel graphics cards simplifies the compatibility issue.

Even before VESA announced its AdaptiveSync program, the lines between G-Sync and FreeSync had already shrunk somewhat, and many FreeSync monitors are able to run G-Sync without Nvidia hardware and thus keep prices lower.

Bypassing Nvidia’s certification or using the G-Sync module, Alienware has a $ 200 cheaper QD-OLED monitor that has largely the same performance expectations. When VESA announced its AdaptiveSync performance level (and there is a MediaSync level as well), the industry group acknowledged to Ars Technica that while not its goal, the levels could lead to an end to GPU-specific variations of variable refresh rate (VRR).

Alienware has also introduced some additional features on the new AW3423DWF, including an allegedly improved cable management and a five-way joystick that can display different image modes, including a new creator mode that switches the color gamut to sRGB and allows gamma adjustments. However, with 149 percent sRGB color coverage, you’ll have to do a significant calibration for color-critical work.

Alienware also claims that the new monitor will be easier to install than the previous monitor thanks to its slimmer profile. The AW3423DWF is 5 inches deep without the stand compared to the 5.4 inches of the AW3423DW.

Thanks to the 21: 9 aspect ratio, which gives black stripes when playing on 16: 9 consoles, and HDMI 2.0 connection with a maximum frequency of 100 Hz at maximum monitor resolutions, no QD-OLED display is ideal for modern game consoles. However, the display should support VRR up to 120Hz on the Xbox Series X / S and PlayStation 5 at 2560 × 1440 resolution.

Alienware will begin accepting orders for the AW3423DWF on November 8.
