The Morning After: Does Samsung have a different phone battery problem?

A few years ago, Samsung had serious battery problems when several faulty Galaxy Note 7 phones had exploding batteries. The devices were phased out, and the company spent a lot of time over the following years detailing all the stringent battery tests it did to make sure it didn’t happen again.

Now, YouTuber Mrwhosetheboss, as well as others, have noticed that the batteries in Samsung’s phones are swelling at a disproportionately high rate. This usually applies to older devices, but some are only a few years old – such as the 2020 Galaxy Z Fold 2.

Samsung hasn’t formally responded yet, but battery swelling isn’t a new issue, or the only issue for Galaxy phones. As lithium batteries age, their increasingly erratic chemical reactions can produce gas that fills the battery cells. Many companies suggest keeping your devices’ batteries about 50 percent charged if you don’t use them for extended periods of time.

Volvo’s new radar system, set to debut on the upcoming EX90 flagship electric SUV, monitors both the cabin and the boot to prevent the car from jamming when someone is inside. The idea is to protect yourself from situations where pets or children may be inadvertently trapped in a car on a hot day, with a reminder that the car will surface if it detects that there are passengers inside when it is locked. Volvo says the numerous radars in the trunk, in the car’s overhead console and in the roof-mounted reading lamps can detect “sub-millimeter” movements.
